Habitat : Typically residents of arid, semi-desert rocky savannas, Sand Boa’s cylindrical shape and shovel like nose aid in burrowing.
Food and Hunting : Constrictors feeding mainly on small mammals, Sand Boas will also take birds and lizards. Juveniles especially feed heavily on lizards. In captivity they are fed mice appropriate to their age and size. They are primarily nocturnal, hunting at night when temperatures are cooler and prey more active.
Conservation : Sand Boas are still quite common throughout their range. Sand Boas are captive bred in the pet trade reducing the demand for wild caught specimens. They have been bred in both amelanistic (albino) and anerythristic (black and white) forms.
Captive Care : A great temperament and relative easy of care make this a suitable species for captivity. Their need for a burrowing substrate must be considered however. Most specimens feed well on frozen thawed mice.
